Change of plans...I decided to go with powdercoat. A local shop can have them ready for me by the end of week and the price was right. I'll post pics once I get them.

Powder coat is fine and dandy for a soccer mom, mall crawler like me... but those DIY'ers might want to look at Rust Destroyer, available at home depot. It's a primer that I've been using for some time. Expensive, but the only thing I've found to hold up in a marine environment. It's not quite as perfect as they claim, but it's far and above what the other guys sell... or at least as far as I could find.

As already mentioned, powder coat can be a waste on the "lower" stuff for those that wheel. Since we have magchlo here in winters, I like to keep all of my trail carnage touched up. Rust-Oleum Automotive 15-oz. Truck Bed Coating Black Spray Paint-248914 at The Home Depot matches LOD and Rock Hard 4x4 powder coated bumpers/sliders very well and I've pretty much adopted it for the other "black" areas.

I've never painted metal before so I want to make sure I do this right.

Any suggestions on what primer / paint to use?
I would recommend Powder Coat as others have. Also, since they are already bare metal, take a bit of time and work on the edges with a grinder or file. Usually these ship from the vendor with sharp edges and little surface prep. If you want it to really look good, clean it up, then have the powder coater sand blast it before painting. The powder coat, and paint for that matter, will stick a lot better when the edges are not sharp and the surface is prepped. This should cost no more than $50 for prep and paint/powder coat.

Mine are the Poison Spider mounts also, however I am using a VisionX bar.

There is a paint tutorial in this link from JCR Offroad.
The link seems to no longer exist, they have a page saying why they don't offer finishing, and they seem to be down on powder coating.

i've had no problems with my ace bumpers or the rock sliders.

now I'm needing to paint or powder aluminum fenders
