Gearing is the best mod. It can be expensive but so worth it. Just don't plan on driving over 70 too much because your RPMs climb fast. At least with the manual.

Cdyspeed on here is running 4.88s on 35s and is hating life because they are so low and he's turning almost 3000 rpm at 70. That's spinning pretty fast, particularly when on a long road trip. He's looking at jumping up to 37s just to keep his RPM down and help his mileage.

x2 I just got my Jk from the shop and drove for the forst time with 4.56 gears. What an improvement!!!! But in the highway i think 4.88s with 35s is low. Dont forget that i have a 6speed. Tha autos are a whole dofferent story! If i had an auto with 35s, i would have gone 5.13s. My buddy has that combo and is perfect.

5.13s and 35s on a juice tranny? Wow, that's awful low. I did the 5.13s and 37s and my mileage went down from 16.5 to 15 mpg on the freeway. I hate to see what his is. I loved the power and driveability but highway mileage sucked. City mileage went up to about 15 also once I put in the 5.13s. Comparisions are 3.73s on 37s, to 5.13s on 37s. Mileage was accurate as computer was reset with proper tire size and gear ratios.

Everyone has an opinion on this....I would check out the sticky for the MODIFIED FAQ at the top of the Modified Tech page. Scroll down in the sticky and you'll see a gearing chart with RPM/tire size/gear ratio. Look up your stock tires size & gear ratio and then what you might be thinking of going to. The gearing necessary is definitely different for stick vs auto so there are two charts.

1. Note what your stock RPM is for 70 mph (the charts are RPMs at 70 mph)
2. Look at RPM ranges for the gear ranges you might want.

I saw some guys suggesting 5.13 on 35s. On a manual trans, that is going to wind out your top gear and you'll get pretty horrible hwy mileage, but unreal torque on the trails. If you go 5.13 it also will give you the wiggle room gear-wise to go to 37" tires if you want to.
4.88 will give you good torque, better mileage, but you'd probably struggle a little if you went to 37s.
4.56 is actually a good gear for a lot of hwy travel on 35s, but you'll struggle on steep offroad terrain.

Making decision sucks...Before I purchase my 5:13, I heard nothing but good things about them; now I read nothing but negative comments!...I'm going to install them anyone; I've already paid for them!
