Default weird uneven tire wear

this is tire wear i have never seen before. pretty much every other lug is wearing uneven around the tire from center out to last lug on sides each side. the wear hits ever other lug in line, so one lug will be lower than the one next to it, then the next in line will be higher, stagard all the way around.

pro comp xtreme a/t 37x13.50x16. yes i know about tire psi and what it can do to center and outer edges, over and under inflated. the jeep rides fairly smooth, good steering, gets a little swaying if i hit bumps in road, but im lifted at 4.5" with 37's. so overall pretty good ride.

since the ride is pretty good, could it still be unbalanced and the good ole butt dino may not be feeling the out of round? what is causing this? a jeep buddy thinks it might be schocks. he says since the shocks are more for offroad that it can affect tires. i have rubicon express shocks with 28" or 30" extended length. cant remember the number.

any ideas or thought??

I had the same problem with some tires I bought online. I was told it was a bad shock also. Now that I put them on my jeep they are fine. Put the one wearing bad on the rear.

I agree that a faulty shock or out-of-balance are the most likely causes just because it has that periodic wear pattern.

Both are pretty easy to check so that's where I would start.

forgot to mention it is passenger front tire if that makes any difference.

to check the shock isnt that where i would push down on that corner and check the cycle of the shock? if i remember correctly, push down and should have one full cycle and little more, is that corect?

You are correct.

Push down the corner of the bumper nearest to the shock you are testing. When you release it should go through one complete cycle: up to the top and then back down to its static resting position.

If it goes beyond that the shock is faulty. Also check the seals for leaks.

I had that (cupping) on one of my tires. It was starting to make a lot of noise and causing a vibration when around 55-60 mph. Turned out to be some missing wheel weights.

If it's out of alignment, that can cause problems also.

both my front tires are doing this.... I SHOULD rotate them but im not going to... (or not until I get my rears re-balanced) right now my left rear is missing weights (knocked them off during the last trip, as well as bent my TPMS valve) and Id much rather an out of balance tire in the rear than the front...
