I've had one for three years with the synthetic line. I've had to use it on my JKU twice (my JKU weighs 5400 lbs) and on another JKU once and then an F350 in a ditch once. It performed great on all occasions. I'm told this is the Warn with Chinese parts and that it's unreliable. Maybe if I knew better back then I would have purchased one of the M series or something.

I have been running a VR10000S for over two years and have used it plenty. No problems at all. I am amazed sometimes that the line does not snap. I have been buried deep (jkur ) and the winch will just auger down and the line will stretch and pretty soon the jeep starts moving. I have recommended the VR series to friends and would get another in a heartbeat.

So sounds like a good winch. But I have heard mixed things about steel vs synthetic. I am leaning towards synthetic

Would I recommend it... I'm on the fence. The winch has given me NO reason to doubt it's capabilities and it's always worked (all five times in 3 years). I do pull maintenance on it twice a year as well. The only reason I said I would consider the M series is because it's made in the USA. That's really motivated by two things. First, I like to support craftsman in the US and second, I still believe that US made gear will last for a lifetime.

Flip a coin. Many people swear by synth ropes for both weight and safety. I got a Warn with steel rope back in 1999, and have had it hanging off the front of my 4x4's, uncovered, ever since. Still pulling strong, and still using the original cable without issue. Every once in a while I read new threads about synth ropes and consider swapping mine over, just never got around to it.

Only reason I went with the synthetic is that I could get an additional 20 feet of line on the same winch. (80' of steel or 100' of synthetic)

I run it on my JKU and it does the job. I put 10 pulls on it this summer without issue. My buddy rolled last month and my winch got him back on all 4 tires without a problem. I prefer wire but I ended up going synthetic because as mentioned above it gave me an extra 20ft of rope. The only thing I don't like about it, is that it doesn't free spool the easiest.

I went M8000. The only difference I see, is the VR series has solenoids and the M series has contractors. Maybe, other things, but that is what I noticed.
