Default Uber dumb tire size question

I'm almost too embarrassed to ask, but...I'm currently running 285/75/R16 tires on, I assume, 16" wheels. I want to go with 35's. Whats the largest size tire I can put on this wheel? Please note, I'm not concerned about rubbing or anything else atm, just tire -> wheel. All those other issues will be taken care of shortly

Will a 35x12.5xR17 fit? What about 295/70/18? 35x12.5r18? Yeah, like I said...I suck at this stuff.

Thanks to all!

Well, the the tire measurement goes like this:

The 285 represents the width of the tire's tread, the 75 represents the height of the sidewall, the 16 represents the inner diameter (what size wheel you have) of the tire. So the last digit of any tire your thinking of running MUST be a 16 for them to fit on your existing wheels.

That being said, I'm sure your existing WHEELS are a 16x7, 7" being the width of the rim. Generally speaking, the width of your tire should not exceed 4" above the width of your rim, so 11" would be ideal, you could get away with 12.5 though.

So basically, if you want 35x12.5" tires, youd need 35x12.5x16.

You'd need to run wheel spacers with this setup.

Great summary! Very well stated.

Does the 295 represent the tread width or overall width? A 12.50 is sidewall the sidewall, the tread itself is more narrow and usually listed on the manufacturer site.

The 285 is the width from sidewall to sidewall.

Also, the 75 means that the sidewall height is 75% of the section width. Not that it's actually 75mm.
