True height of Trail Grapplers

When you can't look up how tall the tire is, and you can't measure somebody's, the size can be found from your armchair like this (just plug your tire and wheel size in):
For example using a 295/70R-17:
First: 295 / 25.4 = 11.62" (you converted the tread width to inches, 1" = 25.4mm)
Next: 11.62 X 0.7 = 8.134" (the sidewall of a "70" tire is 70% of the tread width)
Next: 8.134 X 2 = 16.27 (there are two sidewall heights in the overall height)
Next: 16.27 + 17 = 33.27" (the wheel size plus the total sidewall height)
Comes out to 33.27" - really close to the measured size!

That is why tires are measured unmounted. I've seen a lot of post here requesting measurements of tires mounted on vehicles. But there are a ton of variables that factor into measuring tires when they are mounted. For instance, just take a basic size like a 35x12.50 Trail Grappler. Nitto will list the exact height of the tire unmounted. But it's gonna be a different height mounted on a JK Unlimited freedom top with PS bumpers, tire carrier, winch and rock rails using 17x8.5 inch wheels than it would on a stock 2 door JK soft top running 17x10 inch wheels. Can you imagine the difference in the weight of those two JK's? And that's not even taking into account how much a person's chosen tire pressure could vary from one vehicle to another. In my opinion, the tire manufacturers measurement is a lot more useful.

we all just need to stop thinking in terms of height, but re-learn the tire size deal in circumference. That doesnt change with all the variables. My 295/70r17 trails at 30psi about 33.5" tall, but i dont have a precision device to measure it. All I know, is they are heavy, look cool, make just the right hum for me, and were affordable. I wasnt disappointed or overly impressed with the light snow performance i saw right after install, but I did have to go to 4wd alot sooner than with the stock dueler a/t tires. Havent had them in deep snow, but assume theyll do better with some stuff to bite.....I dont want to think about winter yet though. My buddy who runs 35 MTR did say that my tires look like 35's....
