Transmission Rebuild

The only way the transmission will give "more power" to the engine is to change the gear ratios. This will be much easier accomplished by changing the axle gear ratio.
"More power" in quotes, because it doesn't give more power. It allows the engine to turn faster, so it can develop more of its already available power.

What about the gears inside the transmission itself?

I don't know if different gears are available for the 42RLE. You could ask at a transmission shop, I guess. I bet a program change would have to accompany the gear change, though.
