Default Transmission Cooler for JK

I have been trying to find a transmission cooler for my JK. Any thoughts as to weather I really need one or not. I havent been able to find a place here in OK to put one in, most just say it is too hard. Kinda wierd!

Are you running an auto or a stick? I am not sure on this, but I believe the auto transmission is the same as in the KJ. If anyone can confirm this if you do a search for Jeepin by Al in any major search engine he carries some for the KJ.

I wouldn't waste your money unless you're doing allot of towing. If you mount it in front of your radiator it's just going to reduce your engine cooling and probably cause more problems than its worth.

I'd agree on the waste of money. Towing is the major reason for needing one, and the JK can't tow enough to make it necessary.

That said, there are plenty of aftermarket coolers that will probably work. Not sure why one for an older Jeep wouldn't work on the JK.

I disagree with you here. The #1 enemy of auto transmissions is heat. I run tranny temp gauges and know for a fact that when I'm offroad, the tranny temp goes up.

I did too in my old TJ. It went up, but the stock cooling system kept it in check.

yeah but with a cooler I was running at 180 under load rather than 180 at normal. The stock cooling system is passing the tranny fluid through the radiator which is designed to keep the engine at an optimum temp which will usually keep the tranny temp in the upper end of its optimum. That's why a lot of people have tranny trouble with autos compared to manuals.

If my JK had an auto I would install one. Heat is the biggest killer for an auto.
This is what I had on my 04 TJ with the 42RLE, 35" Swamper's and 5.38 gears in Phoenix, AZ. My transmission temps were 160F in the summer time with an outside temp of 114F. Have you considered installing it yourself? If you are not able to have you tried any transmission shops or even U-haul installs coolers.

Default Doesn't use radiator...

The JK's transmission cooler isn't incorporated into the radiator like earlier

model Jeeps.

The cooler is actually built into the A/C coil in front of the radiator.

Seems like this will be a more efficient method of cooling...

That's interesting. I can't waite to get over tendonitis in my hip to check this out.
I think it would be better than the routing through the radiator if the ac is off. The ac coil removes a lot of heat when the ac is in operation.
