Default Tires/rims

Will the rugged ridge 17 X 9 rims fit on a BFG 285/70r17 km2? I know the r17 means the 17 inch rim but the X 9 part im not sure.

how can the foot print of a tire get physically wider than it already is and how would this cause your tire to be smaller?

Its an effect of squeezing or pushing out the sidewalls of the tire by changing the wheel width. A wider rim can provide a larger footprint, and have a slight effect on the diameter of the tire. A narrower rim will cause a smaller footprint, as some of the tread is being pulled up off the road surface, and has the effect of making the tire slightly taller.

i understand that but depending on what psi you are running, you can easily get your entire footprint to make contact with the ground regardless of the wheel width. i've run a chalk test on my tires and i can assure you that it makes full contact

Yeah you can certainly change the contact footprint by changing the air pressure as well. I think most of the effect is actually visual. A wider rim will make it look wider by pushing out the sidewalls. The TSL's that I have on my J10 as 12.50 wide, and on 8" wheels they look taller and narrower, on a 10" wide wheel they look shorter but wider. But its basically visual.
