Default tire on tailgate?

so i know that a 35 is too heavy for the tailgate and a 33 is okay, what about a 34? would a 34 inch tire be okay on the tailgate or would a tire carrier be a good thing to get?

I've pondered the same thing...

Are you talking something weighty like a Toyo MT or AT or more of a street flavored tire? Heavy steel wheel or al?

Guess it all depends on combined weight (even with a 33 I'd guess).

So far the 34's I've researched/contemplated are:
Goodyear MTR (Kevlar)
Toyo MT
Maxxis
BFG AT (but unfortunately only avail in an 18)

I really wish there was a database of honest tire weights (& actual size).

That said, I'm thinking about checking out MTR Kevlar 34s and will eventually add a tire carrier to be safe. That way if I decide I need 35s I'm good to go.

This is the best answer...Depends on combined weight more than any thing else.

First post/reply here!

I'm actually wondering the same- will a 285/75R17 Toyo MT on a stock 17" wheel be too heavy?

I believe the tire alone is around 71 lbs.

I think anything bigger than the stock rubi tire on a stock rim is too much. I've gotta redneck tire support for my 35in spare.

Default 35-34"

I have been wondering the same and am wanting to see what people are running as far as size on the rear tailgate. I know I am getting ready to upgrade to 35" with steel rims and I am going to weigh them against the stock setup to see the difference but is anyone out there running that larger size with problems to the rear gate?

I've seen 37s on a tail gate with a heavier mount. I think it's the plastic mount that has the issue not the gate.
