Tire question: tall and skinny on 16's
I'm pretty sure I'm going with some Duratracs, but wanted to know the tallest tire I could do with 16" wheels. I'll be running spacers with my stock wheels, and originally planned on getting 285/75/16 Duratracs.
Skinny enough to fit on stockers without spacers, but really would like do do 35's, but skinny. I've seen KM2's in 255/85/16 and I might do that after researching on-road handling.
This is my DD but I'm turning it into my expedition jeep. I'll be off-road as much as possible, but not going for extreme. I want to get there, maybe mountain bike, kayak, hike, camp and do my job (photography and film) but don't want to be worried if I have the right tire.
Any suggestions would be awesome, as I've had no luck finding anything bigger than 33.3 on 16's.

Pretty sure Interco is your only choice in the USA. I was on the same page as you and gave up and got 315/75-16's for my daily driver tires (on aftermarket wheels). I'd love to have some Q78's for offroad only.

I saw some tall and skinnys on a Land Rover the other day in a parking lot. I wish I had checked the size now. They were probably a taller rim than 16 though. I'm almost positive they were BFG MT KM2's.

255/85R16 has a few options. I personally ran the BFG M/T kms on our old Montero Sport and the were AWESOME. Siped center lugs and handled as well in wet stuff as the previous Michelin LTX A/T I had on before 265/75R16
I definately reccomend them.

We're in Dallas and it rains a lot in the spring and fall. Never any problems.
Since they are "skinny" you have more force between the tire and the road and they don't hydroplane as easy as a wider flotation type tire.
That, and siping the center lugs made a HUGE difference.
Snow traction was better than good. When I first put the tires on I was in Lubbock and we would have snow fairly often.
Again, they were siped. I like them better than a set of Revo A/Ts I had on our '02 WJ, BFG A/T kos on our '94 ZJ, and better than the michelin ltx a/t that we had on our montero sport prior to the BFG 255/85R16.
The guy we sold the Montero Sport too is still driving it and still with the same tires! Translation: Long tread life!
