Default Tire almost came off...

Was pulling into work tonight and felt my tire wobbling and I look out the window and see my left rear tire half way off. I jacked it up and take the tire off 3 of the bolts broke off and 2 just barely hanging there by the spidertrax wheel spacer. When I installed the spacer, I followed the directions and retighten them after 50 miles. These spacers have almost 3000 miles on them. Has anyone ran into the same problem, I don't want to have this happen again in the future. Also with 2 bolts remaining, I plan on bringing it to the dealership first thing in the morning. How safe of a drive is it, it's only 10mins away?

Tow it, dont drive it. The spacer and wheel come loose, you lose control of your jeep, the wheel goes through an innocent persons windshield killing someone. Tow it...

It was the stock wheel studs, not the ones supplied with the spacers, correct?

A quick search on 'wheel stud' will bring up a few relevant threads, as well as some possible causes, and info on replacing them.

And another vote for towing.

Also, I wouldn't go to the dealership for this. If you don't want to replace the studs yourself, try a local mom and pop tire shop or general automotive place. It will likely save you a decent chunk of change.

Yes, they were the stock studs.

Properly installed, they are no less safe than wheels or more likely to come loose.
After researching that's what I know what happened. That's what happens when you don't read directions.... Noones fault but my own, I never came across a bolt that goes on in both directions.... Live and learn

Thanks for everyones help

Ive been running my spidertrax spacers for about 60k miles now and no issues at all. I do check the tighness every tire rotation but the are always tight. Did u use the loctight on em?

Yes, I did but since I installed the nut the wrong way, I guess it didn't matter. Now when you check your spidertrax are you getting any movement and if you did do, do you reapply that stuff? Because it does " break the seal" once you retighten them correct? Or does it even matter.

Another vote for towing it...VERY dangerous to drive it like that!

I have the same spacers on my Sahara. I tighten them every time the tires get rotated. I also use an impact wrench when I tighten them just to be sure.

WOW! Help a n00b out ... where can I read more on this? Bolt that goes on both directions? I no understand. (I had a shop install my spacers but I installed it for my spare - most likely less danger there but would still like to know.

Lug nuts are conical on one side. The conical side is supposed to face the wheel when you put it on and torque it down. It keeps the wheel stud centered in the wheel to prevent the exact same thing that happened here.
