Teraflex tire mount or Smittybilt oversize tire carrier?
#11
Buy American, I vote TF although Poison Spyder makes a nice rear bumper/tire carrier combo. Smittybilt is only a small increment cheaper than American-made products that don't have the potential fitment/quality problems associated with parts that come over in a container. What's more, there's actually a replacement part supply chain for said American-made products.

Another vote on the TeraFlex - here's my thing with 37" Mud Grapplers hanging off the back of it... Solid as a rock
Also, check out the Brake Nuts kit we have, a clean solution for the third brake light. Feel free to contact me any time for forum member pricing on the carrier or lights

Another vote for TF. They actually make a 3rd brake light bracket with CB mount for the hinge / tire carrier. If you spend a little more for the complete set up, hinge, tire carrier, and 3rd brake light bracket ( If you want to keep the factory 3rd brake light look ) you can't go wrong.
Easy to install, just keep your hinges and hardware in case you want to switch to anything else in the future. The whole system is SOLID and haven't had even a hint of a rattle from back there with a heavy 35'' Mickey Thompson / Nitto Mud Grappler combo.

Thanks for all the replies!
I've just been concerned about the tire mount failures on the TF. My plan was to get the mount first since I only have 265/75R16 at the moment However, will go to 315/75R16 when these need replacing. I do have new wheels with 4.5" backspace that don't allow tire to touch the bumpstops. I know the bumpstops can easily be extended for little cost, however, that still leaves the weak factory carrier.

I have the same amount of backspacing, and I actually had to TRIM the foctory bumps with the TF mount. The adjustable mount pushes the tire in closer after you do your measurements so it can make slight contact with the hinge. So your backspacing will be fine.
As far as failures, everything I've read about it have been people running a 40'' which it's not meant for, or didn't maintain proper adjustment of the spare on the carrier.
At the end of the day it's your call, just letting you know I run the same amount of backspacing and its fine.

Personally, I wouldn't put anything made by Smittybuilt on my Jeep, hence my vote for the Teraflex hinge. I have the Teraflex hinge, along with the tire carrier, and it is a great setup.
