Default TeraFlex Hinged Carrier install write-up

I'll have a write-up of the installation of my TeraFlex Hinged Carrier posted later today. I think it's a very good idea to watch the video before starting the install. My write-up (which we improved while sm_rubi installed his carrier) has a few pointers and tips for the at-home mechanic.

There are already a half dozen or more write-ups on installing it. I did mine and it just isn't difficult at all.

Now there are a half dozen or more + 1! I needed the practice doing a write-up, anyway. It really is a very straightforward install.

Anyone just running the carrier without the hinge package? I am on a budget and I'm trying to run my 35" spare safely without having to worry about it falling off and killing someone at 75mph

If you are how is it holding up?

Pretty sure its the hinges that create the strength not the carrier. Spreads the weight across the entire gate.

By itself I don't think the carrier adds much other then height adjust-ability but I could be wrong

Yep! The hinge itself is what strengthens things, not the tire carrier from what I've been reading...you'll end up tearing/bending the tailgate without the hinge to support the additional weight of the tire/wheel

I'm going to run the hinge only then. Quadratech has it for $499 with free shipping and it usually only takes a day or so for them to ship to me

Any auto place mounting tires of this size on the factory mount should warn the customer that there is a potential of damaging the tailgate hinges with the added weight. I would have bought this at that time. Can't wait to get my tire back outside my Jeep! I have the extension on the mount to allow the 35 to fit on factory mount. Will I need to use this with the new mount? Any feedback or photos on the third brake light position?

Not the best pictures, but my jeep has the stock carrier and an adapter with the terraflex hinge.

Default Teraflex HD carrier with 315/70/17

Installing this carrier this week on RHD 4door with stock rear bumper.
Wheels 315/70/17 Duratracs with AEV pintlers rims.
Will I be able to mount the wheel ok on standard carrier or wil I definately require one of those acessories for larger tyres ?
