Exclamation Tailgate Noise from Larger Spare??

So Ive been running my 35" Spare on the stock carrier for about a year now. But lately there has been some noises coming from the tailgate when I hit bumps and just drive down the road. The other day i decided to investigate and when i shake the spare there is a type of clicking noise coming from the tailgate hinges (or so it seams)

Has anyone had any problems close to this or involving a larger spare and the tailgate???

The last thing i need is to hit a bump and see my spare/tailgate disappear

Do a search and you'll find several threads, and more people have these problems that not.

i got some popping sounds when i hit a big hole, i plan to put a tire carrier , i only got 33in but the wheel is too offset , the bump stops dont touch the tire and the factory carrier is a bit weak...

Probably your tailgate popping where the carrier attaches to it, the metal is very thin and will waffle the tailgate over time.

Mine did the same thing, exactly. If you open the tailgate you'll see whew they spotwelded the panels. Those welds are breaking loose along the top portion of the gate. I fixed mine temporarily by using a row of self-tapping screws along the inside top of the tailgate, but it's doing it again. It's not a permanent fix as it's starting again after a few months of quiet..

I ordered a RR tire carrier bumper and front bumper today, before it's gets to where I need to replace the gate......

I'm only running 33's and am shocked at how weak the gate is...

Good to know. I was thinking about running 35's and have not figured out what to do with the spare yet. The problem is that I just do not want to spend the money on a tire carrier.

i hear ya! i've decided to build my own. if you have the means....

here's a pick of my rear bumper. i'm gonna add a carrier soon using the perfectly good stock carrier attached to a 2" x 2" square tube frame that attaches to the bumper. my cost should be under $50.

I do not have the means. I was looking at going with the Rugged Ridge XHD bumper and carrier. Cost is about $800. Know the question is how much does it weigh?

I have the same problem. Get the daystar tailgate bumstops (nipples) and the popping will go away. My wheels have 3.75" backspacing. I will eventually get wheels that are 5" backspacing, which will eliminate the "popping" or "bobbling" noise for good w/out having to get a tire carrier bumper.

OP, you have a 35" tire. Over time your tailgate will bend. Get a tire carrier bumper.
