Tail gate door changed to pickup tail gate
Hi all has anyone ever make there rear tail gate door go done like a pick up tail gate insted of a swing door? I think it would be nice to be able to leave the tail gate down in some situations. Just a thought.

It sounds like it would be a complicated mess to get it worked out.
The quick and easy solution might be to install the Brett Woods tailgate shock kit to keep the tailgate open. In some rare situation where you need it, you could drive with the tailgate open with that shock in place.

you are right you would have to relocate the spare tire. I dont think it would be to hard to do. I cant weld, but I figure you would have to reinforce the flimsy sheet metal and put some hinges from the bumper to the door, and add guide lines to add extra support.

The thing is I go camping, kayaking, yard work and things, and use my JK like more of a pick up. I know why not get a pick up, but I like jeeps. But anyway it would be nice to lay the tail gate down to slide a kayak in, fire wood, lumbar, etc. etc. It is a pain trying to open shut the swing door with things stick out.

What about a roof rack? for most of those items, I think a roof rack would do the trick. Might be easier and ultimately less expensive than what it might take to convert the rear gate.

I like the idea of a fold down tailgate too. Eventually I plan on getting an aftermarket rear bumper with tire carrier (that locks in the open position). It would be great to lock that open and sit on the tailgate. I have a 2-door, and any its almost impossible to use the back as a "seat" when I have all my gear loaded.
