Default A/T vs M/T

I see many people on these forums getting a M/T tires. They do look a lot nicer, but I will mainly be driving on the road. Should I get A/T instead? How is the wear on the M/T vs the A/T. What about noise?

I've had the BFG All Terrains on my last vehicle, great tire, lasts a loong time. The Mud Terrains on my Rubicon are excellent off road, my nephew's TJ had all terrains and they got packed w/mud, he had no traction going up hills where I walked right up. The mud terrain's blocks don't allow mud to cake in, keeps your traction. But on slick road surfaces they are terrible. I drove on some slick wet roads and had the rear end slide out on me at relatively slow speeds, ESP did it's job well. On ice they are hockey pucks. The All Terrains on the other hand were excellent on snow and ice. Less rubber meeting the road on the Mud Terrains, I would not expect them to last as long as my All Terrains did (60000 + miles.)
I will be getting a set of BFG All Terrains to put on my stock Rubi rims (315-70-17) when the lift gets installed. They will be my daily driver and winter tires. I'll have another set of 35" mud terrains and rims for off roading.

X2

to the above, I have always run the BFG A/T's on my K Blazers, and full size Bronco's. Great tread life, never any problems, quiet well mannered tires on road, ok off road suck in mud. Best snow, ice, and rain tire I ever used, except for sand treads. Would definatly swap them out with the M/T's in the winter up here.

Default Not so fast

SO I replaced the stock Sahara 18" Dueler AT's with MT's and I tell you that the MT's perform better on wet pavement than the AT's. (and 4x as good off road)

I am in Florida where wet traction on pavement is a neccessity in the summer.

I don't get how the duelers can be called A/Ts. They look like car tires to me. I hate mine and am anxiously awaiting my BFG TA/KOs which I have loved on my previous tacoma and jimmy.

fair enough

But the point is that not all MTs are BAD on-road. As was implied earlier.

It partially depends on where you live and what type of off-roading you do. Southern California does not see much rain or mud and the BFG AT/KOs have a good reputation as a reliable desert tire. They are definitely a good off-road tire for many types of terrain.

If you live in a place where the off-roading involvs soft terrain or mud holes, the MT is probably a good choice.

I prefer the look of the MTs but went with ATs as they meet our overall needs very well.

I started a thread like this a couple of months ago and I was also concerned because my jeep is my daily driver.

https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/jk-talk-26/mts-vs-ats-9147/

I finally decided on a mud tire and am very happy with the decision. The last couple of months it has rained alot around here and I have not had any problems on the street in the rain. As far as sound goes it is not as loud as I had expected, just a slight hum I actually kind of like the sound now. Like I said I am very happy with the decision of going with a mud tire I just wish I had gone with 35's.
