Default Synth. rope and winch

Do you think it's possible to put a synth. rope on ANY winch?

Default weight savings

I know synthetic lines are better for several reasons, but how much weight savings could you expect from synthetic line over steel line. My steel line is getting pretty chewed up (I bought my winch used) and am thinking of replacing it with synthetic.

By the way, it is my understanding that synthetic will work with any winch as long as you use a "soft" fairlead and you don't have any rough spots like GI Joe said.

I don't know of any reason that you couldn't put synthetic on any winch.

I do know that once you go to a synthetic, you probably won't ever go back

A winch with an end mounted brake is unlikely to melt the rope under prolonged or heavy use. A winch with the brake inside the winch drum (spool) will get hot. The heat can damage the first and second layer wraps.

I melted my first synthetic rope with a winch not designed for synthetic rope. I now use Superwinch EP9 winches on our Jeeps.

I just got a smittybilt comp10 with synthetic rope, it is about 32 lbs lighter than my old 8000 lb winch with steel cable
