Truss strengthens the axle to prevent it from warping, bending or snapping. The gussets strengthen the C's and prevent them from bending. If you'll only be doing mild wheeling, you could probably do without the truss, but I'd still recommend the C-gussets.

Lot's of people get by with stock D30 or D44 on 35's or even 37's. But IMO its a $130 well spent. Broken axle is no fun.
