Default Stock Spare Tire Carrier + Oversized Tires

A month or so ago I lifted my jeep, slapped some 35's on it, as well as a spare 35" on the rear carrier (I have a custom bumper that fits it)...

If I go over some well-timed small bumps (that dirt driveway at work, etc), I hear some bad 'thunk' noises from the rear tailgate.

I assume this is due to the extra weight and the tire NOT utilizing the "bumpstops" (see photos) ...

I set my backspacing so I could easily fit the tires under the wheel wells, but should I be worried about the lack of support back there? Anyone else have this setup, and how long have you had it for?

I don't want to invest in a oversized tire carrier, because it currently fits?

Daystar makes bumpstop extenders for about $20.

A 35" tire will damage the rear tailgate on the stock carrier sooner or later. Do yourself a favour and throw it in the back for now.

I'd agree. even with daystar bumpstops my spare popped welds on my tailgate.. careful or you'll be buying a new tailgate too.

I've been carrying a BFG MK2 35X12.5 R18 on my stock tire carrier since last summer and have no issues. Just checked it last night and still holding strong!

My gate started to buckle under the weight of a stock BFG. Keep in mind I live back a rough 1/2 mile dirt lane and I'm in and out quite a few times per day.

I had my 35 on the rear for about a year. Installed the mbrp,i think, re-inforcing brackets as well as the daystar bump stops. It was fine until this weekend when it started rattling. Removed the tire and tried tightning all bolts but kept rattling, so I removed tire and threw it in the back. I m waiting for the new tera flex carrier to come out which is supposed to be very soon. Looks really stong and you dont have to change your bumper
