I have been thinking on this as well and want to go with 3" ABS pipe and bend it.

I'm NOT an expert but I have a hard time believing the crinkle tube is causing SO much turbulence that you would gain any sort of performance by replacing it. How's that saying go...something about if there where cheap and simple changes that would improve performance it would already have it from the factory...

One other thing to consider, I have read and also observed engine movement or twist in cars. Some (most?) motors will have room to "twist" under a sudden hard acceleration (not sure if the JK does?) so consider this when hard mounting something between the engine and the frame/body. The crinkle tube may be there for this very reason.

It's actually easier than you think.
All you have to do is cut off the first 3"s or so of the stock tubing.
Throw away the initial section but keep the elbow part of it.
Then insert a piece of 3" exhaust tubing into the elbow and connect it to the airbox.

If you take the stock one off and look at it....it starts at 3" Then hits a wall (like a huge step) where it narrows down to about 2.5" or less. Right before the elbow it enlarges back to 3".

So like I said above, I cut out the 2.5" section and installed a 3" section of tubing.
Any noticable difference?

Here's the big step

As far as gains, I added the K&N at the same time.
I actually posted my results last year. Don't quote me but I think it was an average of about 1.2 mpg with my 35's.
***Edit*** I also did some opening up of the airbox. I got a 2nd airbox and intake tube for free so I was experimenting with the extra set.
