We used a stirrup from an old horse saddle with a piece of webbing attached to the seat bracket. Easily adjusted and out of the way when off roading. Sounds funny but works nice.

Since most rails are round, it is not ease to just "bolt on" a step and go wheeling.
Here is my simple solution for under 50 bucks:
Harley footpegs Push them open to get in, then close them. If you forget and hit an object, they will fold in by themself.
