Starting my JK Salvage Project
Let me start off by saying that I love this site. It has already helped me in my preliminary decision making and the people on here have been nothing but great. OK, enough already, let me get started.
I live in Bloomfield IN. Home of the Hi-Lift jack. I have owned a 97 TJ for about 6 years and in that time have added 2 children to the one I already had, so if I wanted to stay in the jeep business it was time to get some room. Realize that in my town of approx. 2500 people, there are some nice, nice jeeps. We will not include my 97 in that. I want something that will stand out, but to do that I realize what I would want is beyond my means so I had to make some choices. I was looking for a used 4 dr when I came across a jeep salvage yard that just happened to have a 2007 Sahara Unlimited that the insurance company had totaled. I made the 14hr trip with my brother-in-law and hauled it home.
I will get into what was damaged as I go, but here it is.
I'm hoping as I go, you all will follow along and give me your feed back.
Thanks,
Thrillrod

No frame damage
I made sure there was no frame damage before we took it. The main thing wrong was the front axle was destroyed. The story was that the driver hit a deer and then ran it into a ditch. By the amount of deer guts on the suspension, I have no reason to doubt this.
The other things damaged:
Front bumper
Grill
Fender
Driver side flares
A little on the driver side front door (repairable)
Side step
License plate holder
A few issues with the steering but nothing major.
I might be forgetting something.
I'm knocking on wood, but I hope thats it.

If you don't mind me asking, what are the details of the salvage yard you found? Is there a way to find yards that deal primarily in wrecked jeeps, short of using google? I tried that with little luck. I would love to find one nearby just to see what they've got...

That's a great pick up! I can see how it would get called a total, but with not a lot of dollars it wouldn't be rough to turn it into a great rig.
Best of luck with your project, should be cool!

It all adds up.
I was told it was everything added up that totalled it out. Luckily for me it was stuff that I wanted to change any way. As we speak a brand new Dana 44 is going in. New Flares are being looked into and I'll find a new place to hang the license plate.
I also failed to mention that the left front wheel is hanging on the tire carrier without a tire and may be damaged, not sure. And the transmission pan has been punctured.
This might get commical if I keep listing stuff I forgot.
Not sure if this is against the rules but I got it a Daveys Jeeps is Ohio.
