Default Spare tire...

I've been debating ditching my spare tire before I catch it on a rock and peel my tire carrier off the back of my jeep. So here's my question... How many of you have actually needed a spare tire while wheeling? If so what wheel and tire combination were you running, and what was the situation that you were in? i.e broke a bead, cut a side wall etc.

If you pick the options for you needed a spare, please explain what happened and what wheel/tire combo you were running at the time.

Whether wheeling, running service or logging roads I do not feel the need to run without a spare. I'm basically stock and had a nail in the side wall.

Why not a simple skid? I know a lot of guys that run a spare tire skid. Going without a spare is stupid and not fair to people you are with should you get a flat.

Example below.

I have been running something like that, but it doesn't protect it 100% of the time. Last trip it actually caused my bumper to flex into the tub. The spare is either going in the back or not coming.

I only had a stock rubicon tire on my spare when I sliced a valve stem on the trail. (running 35s)

It luckily was near the end of the trail and I made it out ok but I was 300km from home.. So I had to have it towed to a near by tire shop and get a hotel to wait for the shop to open in the morning.

Nice $300 mistake

I bought a 35 from a fellow jeeper who was getting new tires. Its a nice tire at about 50% and paid about $50. Very worth it!

What bumper do you have? The receiver shouldn't flex.

What about a simple adjustable mount? My bumper let's me adjust the height of the spare. I have a 37 mounted and zero chance of it hitting the ground.

Bumper was ACE, replaced it with crawler conceptz skinny series (BFH copy). My spare is mounted on an ORFab no cans carrier. The bumper should never make contact with anything now, but the spare is looking pretty vulnerable when coming off a ledge or going into a dug out climb.

I voted that I had one but haven't needed it. I know it's coming one day though. A buddy I was with recently on trails tore up the end of the stem and couldn't air back up when we were done. He needed his. Good to have for sure.

Looks like a roof rack is in order since you seem set on not carrying a spare on the bumper/tailgate.
