snorkels... pros & cons

You join millions of others who successfully contributed to the national business of paying for degrees. Colleges and universities don't make money flunking people. Some conspiracy theory humor for ya. As for the snorkel, like I said, I have my opinion. If you are in dust, it aids but doesn't prevent. If you get in water deep enough, or not the right speed, it will prevent hydro lock. Had a snorkel on my Landy, and, had entered a creek where the water rolled up over the hood, partially up the windscreen and the snorkel did its job. I was submerged beyond the bottom trim of the windows by about 6" for around 2-3 minutes. As for the smartness, I just make people walk again and in between that, I am designing another powered prosthesis to assist people with a hip disarticulation to ascend stairs with no ancillary support. In the mean time, I am the global leading prosthetist fitting the worlds only powered prosthetic leg working for a manufacturer and leader in the industry. My next feat, getting my name on my 7th national and multi country patent. On the side, I lecture to the up and coming prosthetic students, physicians, physical therapists and fellow prosthetists as well as provide education to the healthcare insurance industry. I'm actively involved with CMS and Medicare to rewrite prosthetic policy and make sure the general soda sucking, pancake loving, ciggy puffing general public that we can provide them with legs when their diabetes and dysvascular issues go full throttle. On the side of that, I am involved with the NEIRB and human studies on gait, gait pathology, recovery, psychology and how to design and implement new products to improve lives and mobility which in turn has proven, under a plethora of studies, how significant proper intervention can be in improving one's overall health. Oh, I almost forgot. I never flunked a course. In either of my masters programs or my b of s degree. Either I'm smart, or as I might believe, they just liked my money. I'll vote for the latter. Roll to Colorado. Let's see you crawl a little. I'll share how a DOS system understand the variable and dynamic algorithms in gait while using strain gauges, kinematic sensors and load cells. Then, I'll treat you to witnessing a wheelchair bound person walking for the first time in 15 years. Then, I'll show you how to walk away from that with some humility. Then, maybe, I'll buy you a beer. Or, you can continue being the forum hero and schooling people regarding their rig to which they spend their money customizing it the way they like. Your posts are entertaining, but you have yet shown any data. I'm like you. I need data. You have yet to provide any in opposition to the coveted snorkel. As for me? I loved it. Between my numerous ATVs and the good old Landy.

I'm gooder at maf and fisics not riddles.
Math and Physics.
Pros and Cons please. I'm really interested in that being my next purchase. Just debating what brand. And service is key!
im being facetious.

Now that was a badass response! Hell yeah!
Change your oil and filters often. It'll run forever.
As for water fording. Proceed with caution.
Sinking a jeep is expensive. With or without a Snorkel.
I am working on data. I just don't have a Snorkel for testing.
I was at Poughkepsie July '14 it was awesome. Driving up that creek with boulders in the middle was epic.
So was the Alpine Loop.

Can anyone speak to what depth of water would be required for the air box to be submerged in a water entry commensurate to this image? I'm on the fence regarding a snorkel. If i do, it will be the RR which kind of would need installed prior to my rocker guards that will go on in spring. <img src="https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=592254"/>
Lookin for the pro...

All you have to do is make sure the lines of force run congruent with the universe. Jokes aside, it really all depends on your vehicle height, angle of entry, speed of entry, wheelbase, flow rate of the water, density of the bed (river, creek, pond, lake)........ You get the idea. It varies by vehicle set up and water hole features. Simple geometry will get you a rough estimate.

And if u get water flowing about halfway up the windshield, u better make damn sure the occupants in ur jeep also have snorkels or air tanks cuz they will hydrolock too! Lol

The basin isn't small, so it would take a long time between cleanings, unless frequently driving through dense soil dust without a pre-filter.
No need to remove the fender.
There's a water drain.
He wanted to clean it after some 10 rides in the desert, following in a wake of soil dust for a total of about 40~50 hrs.
We opened the drain pipe, which was lengthened, so reaching it was easy), removed the Rugged Ridge pre-filter, then poured some water into the high mount, to flush the basin.
We thought that the very fine Loess soil, mixed with water, might plug the drain pipe, so we had a wire ready, for inserting though the drain if needed.
The pre-filter seemed to have done well, as the water came out nearly clean.
With the low mount, pouring the water is at hands level.
The only problem with the low mount is that RR don't have a pre-filter option for it.
I would like a pre-filter on the low mount, but do not see it as a big issue -- The larger and more problematic soil grains are trapped in the basin (and there's the engines' air filter), and the smallest sand grains will go through both the pre-filter & basin.
However, if enough of us address RR with a request, they'll make it.
The pre-filter accumulated dust in it, and was emptied after each trip.

Just to clarify, it's not necessarily windshield deep water fording that snorkels are useful for. A steep entry into a water hole and the front op the rig is submerged. Guess what? That's where the intake is. Right behind the right headlight.
As long as you keep the headlights out of the water, you "should" be ok.
Ask anybody who actually has a snorkel if they suffer from power loss, you'll get the same answer. Sure it's a less direct route to the engine, but you get cooler air to mix with your fuel.

Thanks Billbikes.
Thanks to all that responded.
