I see stuff like this and am worried truly about taking my jeep off-roading, is this truly something to be worried about if I just off-road maybe once a month or so? Nothing crazy. But I don't want to have to worry about going on a small trail and seeing this happen when I don't even do anything hardcore. I'm not very financially well off to consider upgrading to a pr44 or anything right now, but would like to know how I can avoid this at a reasonable cost. I'm on a d30 and 35s. Any insight would help, sorry for the thread jack.

Sleeves move the break from the normal location at the passenger side ca mounts to the end of the sleeve at the pumpkin. There should be a few in this thread:

This is old info,
I wouldn't bother sleeving a 30 or 44 because the tubes can still bend at the differential. I had sleeves installed in my factory 44 and the tubes still bent. Best advice is to play with what you got and save up for a better housing. I now currently run a ProRock 44.

But wouldn't sleeving most likely have prevented a catastrophic break like this? I could limp down on a bent housing theoretically?

Best way to prevent this from happening, and even this isn't 100% certain, is to change to the 225/75R-16 street tires that front axle was designed to handle. Jeep under engineered the front axle on these JKs even for stock use. Add larger tires, and its just a matter of time before the front axle fails.

There is a guy in Cincinatti that sells complete Mopar D44 axles (minus calipers, I believe) for $1800.
My intention is to replace my front with this after it is gusseted and trussed (and maybe sleeved for good measure).
I'm sure you could find a D30 housing for <$500
