Not trying to hijack. Just went through a similar debate trying to save on the rear bumper/carrier combo. In the end I decided to go LOD. It hurts in the short term to drop the extra cash but I could not find a single post where someone complained about the quality or price in the long run. Hope that helps.
Cheers!

I have one...solid as a rock. My only complaint is that during the rain the handle would wiggle out of the locking position. A minor amount of electrical tape solved the problem. You can see it installed if you go to my for sale ad for a black 2011 in the jeep recycler sub forum

i installed mine couple months ago, installation was i piece of cake, truely bolt on, i did it myself. Very cool looking bumper and tire carrier, and i have not had one problem with the latch. Could not be happier, i paid $750 shipped, dont recall who i purchased it from. There is a cool forum thread on how to run the power to the third brake light, oh and it comes with the mount to reinstall your third brake light.

I can agree it's a solid bumper. Especially for the price. Smittybilt does of the reputation of being a PITA to install, but the rear bumper went on no problems. Haven't had any problems with the latch either. The third brake light beaker it comes with is kind of lake in my eyes, the bumper is all powder coated black steel and it comes with a plastic bracket. I just didn't set that up.
Good luck with your decision.

well, in all fairness, i suppose it all depends on the kind of trails you run but, from what i have seen, the rocks on the rubicon and out in the mojave desert are a lot more solid than this bumper...

I have this bumper and have been happy with it for the most part. It's really the only bumper/tire carrier combo at that price range, so it's hard to compare with others. I had some initial issues with the handle that were easily remedied by adding an additional rubber washer to the handle assembly. That tightened everything up, and there's no more handle lift.
This bumper is a no frills/minimalist setup that accomplishes the goal of getting a 35" or larger tire off your tailgate while providing D-ring mounts and a receiver hitch for about $750. That's pretty hard to beat.
You can buy a setup that costs another $300-$500 that might be a little more solid and has a fancier handle, but will basically accomplish the same goal as the Smitty.
