This little addition has saved my tire/carrier a few times in Moab and Rausch Creek

Plenty durable. It can get scraped for sure.
Similar hinge set up we use on our other style of tire carrier.
We have done the JK Experience, Rubicon trail, Moab and many other trails, no issues.

I can recommend the Bestop HighRock Rear Bumper & Tire carrier.
Strong, nice welds, durable finish.
This was tested when a car hit it while waiting at a red light. The cars' front caved up to the radiator. There wasn't even a scratch on the paint of my bumper.
The tire carrier hinge is massive and well protected (no part of it sticks out below the bumper).
With a 35" (315/70/17) on it, along a year of DD and offroading, including high speeds offroading, it is completely silent (no rattle), and there's even no need to re-adjust the link to the gate.

On this carrier, with a 35 inch tire, I can tell you that if Im on an angle steep enough to hit or drag that tire, then Im rolling over backwards. Furthermore, if your worried about denting your tailgate because you backed into something hard enough to cause this to crush into the tailgate, well, perhaps you need to pay more attention to whats behind you. No matter what design you go with, if your backing into something that hard, your going to damage something.
