Should I keep my D30?
I have just lifted my 07 JKU Sahara with a RK 3.5 Mid Arm Kit. My plan is to run 37's. So my question is, I want to regear with 5.13's and planned on swapping and getting a rubi D44, but after thinking about it I am wondering if I should just stick with my D30 since they are the exact same axles except the ring and pinion size. This will mainly be my DD, but will be taking it offroad and eventually (maybe next summer head out to MOAB.) I would reinforce it and put new shafts etc.

Ive wondered about this also im lookin to regear i have a 44 in the back and 30 up front if i regear do i have to replace my d30 upfront? Or just changin out the gears are fine for both difs/axles?

Personally, I would skip buying a stock rubi 44 and then regearing and upgrading it, and just go with any of the aftermarket 44's/60's instead. If you can work a deal on an already built rubi44, go for it.

5.38 gears are not made for the d30 anymore, so if that was your choice, you would need to replace the front axle. Any other gear ratio will be fine. If you currently have 3.21 gears, you will need to replace the carrier in the d30, that is maybe $80 or so. Either that, or buy a full case locker or a Truetrac.

I'm wanting to do a regear as well. I have a 2011 sport 4dr with 26k miles and no wheeling yet. What else do I need to replace other than the ring and pinion? Also, should I be expecting to pay to have this done? Thanks!

With the amount of money you will spend on your D30, its better to buy a D44. At least with a 44, you can built it do truely handle your 37s where the Dana 30 just won't quite hack it no matter what you do.

If you are asking about the cost to have it done, prices vary wildly by location. A few high volume shops are charging $1000 out the door. Other places are charging $2500-$3000. You need to check all of the shops local to you instead of judging the price by what someone on the other side of the country paid. But, figure that the $1500-$1800 range should be fairly average.

It ultimately depends on your wheeling, but....I'd say definitely get the 44. I was in your boat, in fact, I fully built my d30 on 37s. (ARB, RCVs, gears, trussed, sleeved, skidded, c-gussets, synergy bj's). Lasted a little over a year wheeling in rocks. I blew it up, and am now running a PR44. For all the money I dumped in the 30, i could've upgraded off the bat. If you're just doing light duty trails, your 30 will probably be fine.

You've been here a couple of years with a couple hundred posts.... I'd say you aren't looking for a realistic answer, but rather some poor advice from someone that accepts the idea of "misery loves company" as their mantra.

Not at all bud. I am just trying to be realistic in what I need and on price. I have no need for a PR44, nor could I afford one at the moment. I am working my way through school and I am trying to build a capable Jeep for what I am able to use if for now. When I am out of school and have more time and money, I can then invest in a new Jeep and build it to its most capable form. Thanks "nthinuf" for the threads, I remember skimming through those threads a long time ago and it was good to read through them again.
