Shock Boots...Requirement or Usless?

I know on a Mountain Bike, it depends on the quality of the shock. The higher end shocks don't use them because they don't need them. The seal around the shaft has a much higher tolerance than older and/or cheaper shocks. If you go to Wal-mart, the cheap bikes with shocks will have boots on them. Go to a real bike shop, non of them do.

I Recently purchased a new Teraflex 3" Lift for my 2008 Rubicon Unlimited and I was wondering why none of the kits on the market today come with the shock boots included. I see the stock shocks have them but are not sealed at the bottom so they can breath. So what do all of you fellow jeepers think are they a requirement or just plain usless.

I'm going to try them because after 1 chicago winter i HAVE to replace my superlift shocks. The shock shafts are soooo rusted and pitted its unbelievable. The way i see it, they can't make the problem any worse.

I voted requirement but after reading the forum I've decided they are useless; they do trap dirt and seem to cause premature rusting, i guess if you leave them off you can clean them better; always thought mud might go down into the shock itself but i guess the shock boot really doesn't prevent this, it's the shock itself that will keep the internals clean; off mine come
