In case of an accident, I don't want that winch cable shorting and starting a fire. I turn on the winch when I need it.

Solid-state might not always be better, but for our Canadian winters, I felt it was a superior choice. If I was in a dry / warm state, I'd probably choose the solenoids.

While the MOSFET stuff is nice, it is more expensive to repair if there is a failure. It was the MOSFET system that failed on one of the winches in that "Winches in Hell Shootout" not too long ago. Read all about it:
