Sell hard top and replace with Trektop NX year round?
#12
I know this thread is old but can anyone have any latest feedback?
I am looking to sell the hardtop and keep my Bestop Trektop NX on all year round. Would love to hear how it has worked out for everyone here.

I just traded my Trek NX for a Hardtop but that was only because it was a straight across trade. I scored big time on that deal. My Trek was on it full time and it works perfect. Only downside is if you mount a light bar up top, make sure it's below the top or the wind will blow onto the top and it gets loud. As far as security is concerned that is an easy fix with a motion sensor inside the cab.

I sold my hardtop shortly after getting my jeep in 08 and didn't regret it too much. Reason I sold it was like you, I didn't have the space and I didn't want to deal with getting a storage unit or anything for it. Biggest reason I regret it a little is security but as long you don't keep anything in your jeep that you care about then your good. I lived in Boston when I sold it and ran my soft top with no issues at all even with nasty winters. I replaced my stock soft top with a trek top nx recently and I love it.

While I like my Trektop NX I kinda wish I would have went with the Supertop instead for the little bit more room for camping stuff. My hardtop has been off for 3 years now and I dont miss it but my Jeep is mostly garaged except for going to the boonies.

I think it all boils down to personal preference. I have the dual top option and love having both. I also have a garage with a ratchet to raise the roof and find it's easier to go topless than with the softop. I like the dual tops, because sometimes I just get board and like to change things up.
I would think other than security, one of the bigger reasons to keep the hard top is if you plan on selling your JK one day. Not everyone like's the soft top and buying a JK new the soft top goes for less, so you just lost money in re-sale value. So while you might make some money by selling your hard top, you'll likely lose that when you go to sell because you're eliminating many potential buyers by not having the hard top. It's cheaper for someone to buy a soft top if you purchase a JK with a hard top than vise versa, unless you find someone like yourself looking to off their much more expensive hard top for the cost of a soft top.

I've been running the TrekTop NX exclusively since August 2011 with no regrets. Sold my hard top in late 2012 after it sat in the garage for so long. Pulled the rear window panels off in December 2013 and in April 2014, my Jeep got hit with some hail damage (common here in NTX), which put three small holes in my top. Didn't have the window panels on at the time and actually left them off until I replaced the top my insurance paid for earlier this year. My Jeep has been rained in, hailed in, snowed in, etc. and I still wouldn't go back to having a hard top. Nice for keeping noise levels down a bit, sure, but I love the versatility of my TrekTop NX. Even now, my Jeep sits in the driveway with the rear window panels pulled off and stored in the garage. And if I want open air driving, I flip the Sunrider half back and enjoy the warmth of the sun. Only downside is it's a bit of a pin to take completely off and because of the Sunrider feature, even worse to try and store in your Jeep. Doesn't really take long to take off (5-10 minutes) and put back on; just doesnt' store in the back of the Jep very well. But if you can live with that....go for it!!!
