Many thanks for the suggestions and the photos.
It does seem that the bumper stop brackets are bigger than they need to be for the stock rims and one option is to cut the rubber bumper stops almost all the way down. The instructions (ha!) say that you only need to trim off a little which is just wrong.
The brackets are ok with none stock rims as these (RR sent photos) as these have a different offset so the spare tire sits further away from the tire carrier and the brackets can be adjusted to leave more room and cut away less rubber.
