Default Rugged Ridge Hurrican Flat Flares

Was looking at these, but the problem is the military moved my wife and I to PA, and it seems as if they say all flares that aren't OEM are illegal, but there is a nice Jeep at the trooper station by me with pocket flares on. It says in the description that these are only an inch wider than OEM flares, so would I have an issue here with these?

My Jeep still has TX plates but in a year I will have to get her inspected. A year after that we should be moving on to the next duty station.

So I'm trying to do my research before buying but everything I find seems to be dependent on who pulls you over.

They also have a thing about tread not being beyond the fenders. Right now I have my 33" Duratraks on with stock wheels, but plan on getting Fuel Trophys, just not sure if the 4.5" back spacing would keep them legal with the stock flares until I am sure if I can get these or not.

Jeep is a '13 I got before moving, glad didn't get everything done before moving or it could have cause some real issues. My last JK def wouldn't have passed with Bushwhacker flats and 35s.

Thanks

You are correct that the Pa inspection requirements do say the fenders shall be OEM, and in the flare section it states the flares cannot exceed 3". With that said I have seen many Bushwacker pocket fenders/flares, as well as the Rugged Ridge flat fenders/flares on JK's here in SE Pa. The general rule here is if the tire extends outside the fender/flare it will most likely fail the state inspection. If the tire is even with or inside the fender/flare it will pass. This is just my observation as well as talking with many operators of inspection stations.
BTW, Thank you for serving our country

First, sincere thanks for serving

Second if I were you I'd drive it around and see if you get hassled

Your new to the state and I would tell the officer that and worst case I bet you just get a warning

And then start looking for options

For inspection a lot of folks keep their factory wheels just for inspection

Might not be a good option as you move around a lot

When I was in the Air Force I kept everything at my home of record. MA. I'm pretty sure there are exemptions for military when it comes to registering vehicles and whatnot. I will try to find something on the interwebs in regards and share it here if I can.

Like Matthew said...once you get settled in you are bound to meet some local Jeepers....just try to find a local guy who still has his old wheels lying around and use them for the inspection. l grew up in Pa. and I remember those inspections can be a real pain. I asked my brother in law who is a Pa. State Trooper and he said he never hassles anyone about the tire issue you were stating. His son however does have a TJ and a big Chevy 4x4 so he might be a little kinder and gentler than most.

Just keep your TX state residency. Helps if you have an address to claim down there for mail purposes. My Jeep is registered there and I live in NY. You just pay online every year for the TX registration sticker. When the TX inspection sticker expires just pull it off. What does PA know about what's required in TX? If troopers ask explain you are stationed there from the military. No trooper in the world is going to hassle a vet about that.

That's true. I keep my license, registration, and HOR in Wisconsin. No state inspections for my vehicle and my tags are Wisconsin so I don't really get hassled about it. Wisconsin also requires a front and rear license plate (which is I think is stupid, who gets pulled over from the front) but out here I don't run a front plate. (shhh) Also, little secret between military members, put your ID behind your license when you hand it to him. If he's in the right mind he will give you a verbal or written warning.

I hate the front plate thing, I've had many two seater sport cars and the front plate can ruin the clean lines of the car

I'm pretty sure the reason they are all going to front plates is for fast pass or other transponders used to pay tolls + states who have traffic cams, this way they can get a clean picture of the plate and often the driver too
