Rubicon takeoffs or bigger 16" tires?
I have a Jeep Wrangler X w/ the factory 16" aluminum wheels. I don't want to lift it but I want a little bigger and more aggressive tires. I am debating whether I should get 265/75R16 tires on the stock wheels or just find a set of Rubicon 17" Takeoffs.

It will be a lot cheaper to just get 16" rubber, than to get 17" rims AND rubber.
The 16" tires are cheaper than the 17" tires....so every set you wear out and replace costs more for the 17's.
You could fit 305/70/16's on there w/o much trouble...maybe you'll add a washer to the turn stop bolts, etc...but, people run this size w/o a lift.
285/75/16's would be another size that fits easily.
Enjoy!

I was thinking of just going slightly bigger to 265s instead of 285s or 305s. I'm worried that if I go that big without a lift I will run into problems offroading because they will hit the inner fenders and suspension.

IE: If you DID NOT offroad, just mall crawled, etc...an SL helps larger tires clear...but, as you DO off road...an SL will still allow rubbing, unless you limited the uptravel, robbing you of articulation, etc...
But not for 33's, which are only going to protrude 1/2" more than the 32" STOCK JK tire that comes on the other JK packages/models, etc.
So - the wider tire will not be so much of a problem...but, TALLER than a 33" tire WOULD be, etc.
The 285/75/16 is a really safe size for you....lots run these, w/o a lift, or spacers of any kind, etc...
IE: a 255 is a stock width, and you're sweating about adding another 5 mm of protrusion width by going to a (Gasp) 265?
Add another 15 mm of protrusion, live for danger.
Seriously - 285/75/16....go for it.
Hey - I just noticed you're in Princeton, I'm in Lawrenceville next door.

I went with the 265/75-16 tires on the stock steel wheels.
Big enough to look good without a major hit to mileage or drivability.
Plus the load range E should hold up to the desert rocks better than a P rated tire.

Thats cool that you live in lawrenceville, if you see a red 2dr x thats stock except for Borla exhaust(and bigger tires in the near future) that would be me. Next time there is a Pine Barrons run we could convoy it down there.
