Yes, you need to change both front and rear at the same time. Regardless if you are in 4wd, the front and rears are rotating while moving and MUST be the same. Gears are NOT something that you can do0 yourself (ok well, most cant) They are a very precise science and only those who have alot of experience in gears should be trusted to do so. For example, I have a mechanic that i will trust to do anything but gears. I take my Jeep to a gear specialist for changing gears. Expect to pay 200-300 per end for labor alone. A good set of gears with install kit will be about 600 bucks (Dave at Northridge is your go-to guy for gears). Just my opinion though.

4.88's would be putting the jeep around stock performance. When I regeared I wanted a little more pep.

Plus I knew I would be upgrading the 37's in the future and 5.13's would be the minimal gearing for 37's..

even if you werent going with 37's in the future, would you still want the 5:13's? Happy with the highway performance and rpm's at 70?

For sure, without a doubt...

RPM's on the highway are not that bad. I surely would not want any less of a gear..

Actually, I'm concerned I wont like 37's with 5.13 gears.

I have been playing around with gearing on and off over the years. Not an installer, but had a few hot rods and such in my time that needed to be re-geared.

I setup this excel spreadsheet so it can be used the see the gear changes we make in our JK's. There are 2 tabs in the spreadsheet, one for 6 speeds and one for autos.

You can select the final drive ratio, tire diameter, gear, and transfer case position for X and Rubi. You can compare your existing setup to any combination of new setup in any gear and see the RPM and Speed. It will also show you the % of mechanical increase or decrease the motor will see.

When you click on a cell that has a variable you can change, a drop down menu will show up for you to make a selection.

I hope this is helpful to someone...
