Custom made brakets for the Mopar Overland Jeep Wrangler that clamped to the roll bars inside which would transfer the load from a roof rack mounted directly ontop of the hard top to the roll bars..but you'd have to drill holes through the hard top. Looked like a really slick design, too bad as with many things ...just a one off, none in production that are known
Anyone have an opinion on this setup? If it's good I'd love to get my hands on it.

Anyone in SoCal know of a shop willing to tackle a job like this? I'm thinking of going with an ARB roof rack and I like the low profile look of this one with the custom mounts. Off Road Evo maybe?

I got some rails off a Toyota 4-Runner, cut them to size and rattle canned them. I purchased the Thule rack off Craigslist, along with the fairing. The basket is a hitch carrier with the hitch bar removed. The alluminum type was half the weight, but fit and looked awkward (I may get another alluminum carrier to cut up and customize, and try it again). I've had the top for over a year and no issues (I kept the top when I traded my old Jeep for this 2012). I limit the total weight to 200lb however so I can keep the center of gravity low (and not hurt he top). Anyway, less than $200 in it and it's low profile, light and quite, but there when you need it.

Yakima yak
I have the Yakima rails (didn't trust the gutter mounts) on my 2010 JKUS. Only use for light stuff at low speed, mostly trips to HD (gutters, ladder, aluminum screen frames). Would be good for pair of kayaks or a single canoe. Wouldn't excees 100 lbs. But, then JK is a vehicle with an already high center of gravity, why would you want to increase instability? For really big stuff (riding mower, sheets of plywood or roofing material) I borrow my neighbor's trailer.

P.S.: cross bars are really noisy on the highway. Yakima's bars are held be lever on each end making removal/reinstall fast and easy. The snap-in mount covers protect mounts from dirt and debris.

Has anyone seen, heard, or experienced any failure of the rain gutter mount style racks or failure of the hard top using this style? I am considering the garvin specialty 4-door rack they have. it uses the gutter feet on the front and body mount on the rear.

Very cool ezav8tr and Sahara Lee. I was looking to do the same mostly to transport skis. I wanted to mount it on top of the ridge like Lee did but I wasnt sure if it would hurt the top at all. ezav8tr, are you noticing any flex in the hard top mounted like that?
