ive been deep enough to have the bottom of the cone in water. Also when some run through mudd holes they sling it all under the hood. Im just saying for people like that this is not a good idea but for anyone else its a great buy

Putnam dan, that makes sense to me. What messed me up was reading K&N's site on the differences between their 57 and 63 series .

(from site; " These intakes use only non-metallic rotationally molded tubes that can reduce intake air temperature and decrease intake sound over a metal tube.")

And I see now that I took that to mean the tubes reduced temp and sound, but after re-reading, I see they just meant, "reduce sound" over a metal tube.

I may be wrong (I am not a performance buff) but it seems like all of these intakes would be more effective if they drew colder air in from outside the engine compartment. it does not seems like anything on the market currently does that.

Honestly it doesn't matter if the intake has a heat shield around it or a metal tube. The air going through the engine bay will be the same temperature no matter what you try to do by blocking off the filter from the rest of the intake or have a metal tube that will resist heat better. These concepts are all marketing gimmicks to make people pay more...The only real difference that these intakes provide are increased air flow to the engine, period!

wouldn't the air coming IN from the front side of the outside of the vehicle (through the grill and the wheel well) be cold air?

so, if you block off the back and side of the air box (with a heat shield, that seals against the hood like the airaid one does) then the air that gets to the filter, to go in through the intake, would come from the front. this would make it cold.

if the back and sides of the airbox are blocked off, then all of the air must be coming from outside of the engine compartment - i.e. from air being pushed in through the grill as you drive.

OK the common misconception about the air being "cold" is a mistake. The air is not cold enough to provide a noticeable change in the density of air. You would need a very large temperature difference between the air in the engine bay and the air coming from the side near the air box... likely on the order of 20-30C to even change the density of air a tenth of a kg/m3. I'll agree that there is a difference in density but nothing enough to cause increased power. The main gain is just from more air entering the cylinders. I personally wouldn't wanna pay $250-300 just for a heat shielded intake albeit it does look great under the hood!!

PN: PJ9000 $200

The whole "cold" air is really a side issue anyway. Basically I just think of it as a little cooler air, maybe. The main issue for me is HP gain for the buck. 2nd since all the filters are washable (I think), does one filter dust particles better. The sound is a benefit. HP mods are expense but this is always one of the best bang for the buck mods as far as bolt on items go.

PureJeep........5-7 hp
K&N................8.17 hp
Airaid..............14 hp I don't know if I believe this one.

It seems like air intakes for the JK are a dime a dozen recently (well, more like $200-$300 apiece). Im ready for some damn tube fenders!
