I have a Warn M8000 winch hooked up to a optima battery.....Now i go to use the thing this weekend and i do my first pull and the line tightens up and it just pulls a little and then nothing......

Everybody was stunned that it wouldnt pull out a simply stuck jeep...so i think nothing off it and give him a good tug with my jeep and he comes out....

Now i go to save a POLARIS RAZR...these things are tiny and the winch does the same thing. It tightens up underload and then soon as it should start pulling it just stops......

Also while i was using the winch i started to rev the engine thinking it could use some juice and then the battery light on my jeep came on

So does anyone have a clue as to waht could be causing this???

Do i have to send the winch into warn.

 

Not to try to call the obvious but did you make sure that the clutch was fully engaged? My winch did this once and it was the shift lever was not fully engaged. the winch would pull up the slack and then slip when the tension pulled up. Not to state the obvious but try this before you send it in. Chris

 

How old is your battery?? Optimas are great, but they do go bad eventually, and seeing as your battery light came on that is a hint, also have your alternator checked at an auto parts store (ussually free) to see if it is working properly.

 

I will have to double check the clutch thingy....I thought it was all the way turned. The battery is 4 months old and the alternator was checked 6 months ago and they said it was fine....I thought i read on here somewhere that the alternator in the jk was good???

 

i doubt you'll have to send it back, I've had replace a couple parts on my powerplant and they trouble shot over the phone and sent the parts

The battery light comes on at about 11.7 volts, the thing about a winch is that it draws about 400-500 amps under full load and your Atlenator only out puts about 140 amps. Call Warn Tech. (looks up number on phone) 1-800-543-9276

 

Another thing to check is to make sure you have it properly grounded the solenoid to the frame. That can cause issues from what I understand. Just a possability they might have you check as well.

 

If you want some 17 or 18 year old kid who'd rather be doing something else diagnosing your electrical system, then by all means go to an auto parts store for "free". Worst advice I ever heard. A reputable automotive shop will include the cost of testing in the repair if you opt to let them repair it. Even if you don't, the cost for a load test is negligible at best. Let a professional do it. Don't risk a kid burning your Jeep up. I've seen it happen.
