Default Price of Installing 5.38 Gearing?

I'm getting quotes from a few axle shops in my area for installing new 5.38 gears front and rear WITH overhaul kits. I will be paying the complete cost of the gears+kits.

I need to know what is considered a fair price for installing all of the equipment.

If anyone could give the prices they paid it would help me out a lot, thanks.

I paid $700 for labor fluids.

I have just finished calling and working with all my local installers and have found that each shop seems to have very different ideas of how long the install takes. I had estimates for gears, install kits, front carrier for the D30, fluids and labor range from $1100 as the lowest and $3300 at the top. Its crazy the difference guys are charging.

To clarify, I just need to know how much people paid for Labor or any other common extenuating circumstances that cost them money. i.e.- "Well we got your gears in just fine, but it took us 8+ hours to get the pinion angle right..."

I have a trusted mechanic where I'm not worried about that situation happening above but if he quotes me at $900 and someone else quotes me at $700 that's a hard deal not to take.

Has anyone had install issues that ended up costing them more money than they intended on spending?

The most common issue is that your gears aren't installed right or you don't break them in properly and you have to the job redone. Time = money.

This is like asking how much people pay for insurance. You will get a HUGE difference in pricing depending on where the person is and who's doing the install.

In Jersey the price is about 1700 anywhere you look unless you "know someone" Then they will do it for 100 each axle plus parts... but do you want to chance it???

I would pay 200 bucks more IN A SECOND for a "trusted mechanic" over "someone else".

I would too but this is no cheap project. I'm @ $656 for parts shipped to my door so an additional 7-900 will put me 1356-1556. Which is a difference of ~ 2 paychecks in savings.

I have two for sure trusted shops, but one of them charges 60/hr in labor and the other ~80/hr depending on how happy he is about doing it. Both are great guys and their crew is competent, it's just a money issue.

I'm just trying to establish an average $ amount with owners who have had the re-gearing done, are happy with the result, and any issues they had along the way.
