Default Painting my pro comps

So I have a set of polished pro comps (silver) that I'm ready to paint black. So I figure I need to sand them down, so with what sand paper and how much? And then I wanted to use some rustoeluem black primer, and than some rustoeluem flat black spray paint just the normal kind? Or one made for wheels? Any input would be great

You just need to sand enough for the paint to bond to the metal so a 320 grit should be good. Just like most projects prep is essential. Make sure all oil/dirt/grime is cleaned off the wheels and use 320 grit sandpaper. I like to use the kind you sand with when paper is wet. Most of today's name brand paint is pretty good quality. Make sure you do several light coats and it can look factory. Good luck.

Yeah, I've had some experience painting so I know about the whole prep thing. Just clarifying on paint and sand paper

Since the wheels are metal I would opt for a self-etching primer vs a standard primer.

Sand til the sheen is gone but don't use something too abrasive or you'll end up with scratches that will show through.

So one coat of primer and maybe 2-3 of paint?

I used a coat of self-etching primer followed by 2-3 coats of flat black duplicolor engine paint. Holds up great and easy to touch up

So I should use engine paint, wheel paint, or just straight up rust oleum flat black?

Yeah the finished product is all in the prep. On my old wheels I used wheel specific primer, paint and clear coat. Metallic matte wheel clear, and metallic dark grey matte paint.

You recommend using a clear coat afterwards?
