Yes, you do have to tap (splice) into the factory wire for the license plate light. The brake light wire and ground wire are already in the factory harness in the tailgate. This is the color code for the factory wiring in the taillight and the ORO colors: White with yellow line - Brake light - (ORO) Red White with purple line - Parking lights with license plate light - (ORO) Green White with tan line - Ground - (ORO) Black

BUT - in Florida you only need 2 brake lights... Just make sure you always have at least 2 working:
