Default Not another gear question!

Ok, thanks to the forum, I know what gear ratio I'm going with. My question is brand. Anyone have a brand preference? Any brands I should avoid? They all seem to be the same price (or close). Alloy? G2? Ten factory? Others?

Can't go wrong with Yukon or Superior... I'm about to install Yukon 5.13s in mine.

I got Motive (makes Ten Factory). A division of Midwest Truck and Auto Parts. I'll let you know in 10 years how they hold up.

Local shop does Yukon. They have to supply them or they won't guarantee work so I'm not using them for install.

Unless you are doing the install yourself, best to find a shop close by (less than 30 minutes away) that has experience, references and you trust to take the time to do it right. Using shims to set gear contact pattern and backlash is very time consuming. They will likely use ones they are familiar with. Labor cost can be 2 to 3 times the gears cost.

And be sure to break them in correctly.

It doesn't matter. All those brands are made at the same plant in Korea.

Can you expand on that? Mine are getting installed in two weeks. What would you suggest for breaking them in?

The final break in is where you cycle your gears in the first 500 miles to get them 'fit' to one another, essentially final machining. Your installer should have further direction on this. A post-500 mile checkup should be part of your install where the installer will pop the cover and make sure everything is set right and change the fluid then you're set.

In the first 100 miles, no driving over 60mph and don't go more than about 30 miles without stopping long enough for the axles to cool (temperature cycle). Don't drive at a constant speed for too long. Go easy on acceleration/deceleration.

No towing or off-roading for the first 500 miles.

Keep an eye out for leaks and an ear out for strange noises. There should be neither. Drain, inspect and refill with the good stuff after 500 miles.
