Default Noob Question - Coilover

As I'm researching my first lift (down to TF/RK/AEV), I keep reading about coilovers and these benefits.

Can someone help this newbie out and tell me what a coilover suspension is and why it's beneficial?

Thanks!

The first is a very basic explanation of a coil over system, the second is an example of that type of system designed for off road usage. Do a search on this board and you will see several threads on people building them and reviews of them on there rigs.

Default Noob Question - Coilover

Thanks. What are the general merits to coilovers compared to conventional suspensions?

Had Skyjacker lift for only a few months, did not like it.
Went to Teraflex full flex lift, really liked it.
Few months ago installed ORE coilovers front and rear, really, really like.
Because....articulation, smooth ride on road.
If I had known, I would have saved money and gone straight to coilovers.
