Default Noob Question about Pro Comp 7005 and what tires to use

I am brand new with the Wrangler world. I have a 2009 Sahara and I want to change out the wheels. That said, the Pro Comp 7005 have me sold. Here's the dilemma:

1) If I stick with the stock 18" size, and use the OEM rubber, would the 18x9 Pro Comp work with the 255/70/R18?

If no to the above (or you feel I should not go that route)...
2) If I downsize to the 17"... what size wheel and tire would you go with on a stock suspension? I don't have plans for a lift... just yet (next year's project), so I need ties that will fill the hole, but not rub. I'd prefer a bolt-on set-up (no spacers). I'd also like to be able to use the stock spare wheel carrier.
What brand tire would you say is best bang for the buck? (Mostly on-road with the occasional off-road excursion).

Thanks in advance for all the help.

Your first stop should be the wheels & Tires FAQ:

https://www.jk-forum.com/forums/modified-jk-tech-2/modified-tech-faq-answers-questions-every-newbie-has-18617/

That will have info on tire sizes, rim backspacing, etc. Also browse the suspension and axle/gear faq's sometime.

Per the faq, you can go to a 33x10.50 on stock rims, or a 33x12.50 with wheel spacers or new rims with a better backspace. If you plan on a lift, go ahead and get the biggest you can fit now.

Or, watch the for sale section and grab someones Rubi takeoffs. 17" rims with 32" bfg mud terrains. You can usually find them cheap. Or drop down to a 15" or 16" wheel/tire combo, which should be less money than just the tires for 18" wheels...
