I would never go camping without some sort of protection. Screw the bears, I have ran into/ seen more crazies out camping then anything. Always feel safer in case some meth head in the woods comes a knocking .
Just remember with a bear or a crazie, the gun should be the last option.

I've nothing against guns in fact right now I have six other tabs open looking at pistols and rifles with common calibers, but honestly out in the wilds of Colorado you'll need a winch (and want a wench) much more often than you'll need a pistol. If you're that worried about bears (who are really at least as worried about you) a good can of bear spray costs $27.95.

Also, with the .40 cal you can buy an extra .357 Sig glock barrell and have two guns in one for about $125-150, using same .40 cal mags and a .22 conversion kit to boot. If, it is a good used Glock .40, I offer $350 and put the extra coin into a .357 Sig barrell.
I must say I do not own a .40, more of a 9mm/.45 fan in an auto. I had to consolidate, to many different rds to keep up with!
