Default Newbie question about winches.

I just installed my new Recon Winch and I have a few questions.

1) Should the lever be on "Engaged" or "Disengaged" when driving around town.

2) How do you prevent someone from stealing the synthetic line or the winch?

3) I have seen many setups that attach the winch line to the D-Rings on the bumper, I am concerned that this will scratch the rings and cause corrosion, what can I do to prevent this?

4) I have also read that before I use the winch, I should unspool the line and re-spool under load. How much load is needed?

Thanks in advanced. Below is my setup. I'm currently using the rubber band that came with the line to attach the winch line to the D-Ring.

Well, I would say leave the lever engaged.... You don't want the rope to drag on the street.
B. Where is the hook for your rope? I just cable mine in all the way and put a little tension on it so the hook doesn't rattle around while driving.
And as for someone stealing your rope.... Don't leave the remote/controller for the winch hooked up and accessible.

Ok, I'm not an expert but I'll give you my input anyway

1. I keep mine engaged. It will keep it from unspooling.
2. No Theft is perventable. try to find someway to lock it on. im sure someone on here can give you better info on that.
3. Snug the winch line up and it will keep the D-ring from flopping around.
4. For sure respool. I actually pulled my Jeep on a level service the full length of the rope using a tree to stretch the rope and made sure the rope was wound tight and that the winch worked. This also helps prevent Fraying of the rope.

Like I said, I'm not an expert and I'm sure there are better qualified people to give information but thats what I did and know. As far as theft. I use a Reciever mount winch plate that I can use on the front or back. I only put it on when i need it.

The others have pretty much covered it, keep it engaged, you aren't going to stop all theft, so watch where you park.

The D rings will be fine just put a little tension on it, and yes respool.

Now go out and get into a situation to do some winching!!!!! Or find a H3......

I leave mine on free spool and no issues yet with any unspooling and I thought I read somewhere it helps not wear out the internal break (I very well could be wrong). Hooked mine up to my D ring and snugged it up. Upon spooling the winch I used my half ton truck as an anchor to apply tension. The directions on my smittybilt said to have at least 500 lbs of resistance while spooling to keep it tight. And if someone wants your winch...they'll get it. Other than that I got nothing.
