Default Newbie got a 4 dr with a 3.21 and has questions about re-gearing

So I just bought a 6spd 4 dr '08. If I mis-quote something please don't hate one me. I am not real smart when it comes to this stuff. I just put 33's on it with a 2 inch skyjacker lift. I wanted to re-gear to a 4.11. After a search the mechanic said I can't due to the fact that I had a Dana 33 (or 30??) in the front and they don't make one for it. So he offered to put a Dana 40 on the front. HE said this will basically make my Jeep a rubicon.

The costs were $2400 for the regearing and $800 for the new front end.

Is this my only option??? I am not going to use it for off-road much, if any art all. I definitely noticed it "dogging" a bit now versus stock, what else can I do to pep it up a bit?

Your mechanic is wrong.

You have a Dana 30 front axle. It can be regeared, no problem, without a doubt. 3.73, 4.10, 4.88, 5.13, take your pick.

Rubicon's use a Dana 44 front axle, not a Dana 40. Stock Rubicon Dana 44's use 4.10 gears. It's partially what makes a Rubicon a Rubicon but there are a few other goodies.

Moral of the story is find a new mechanic.

Thumbs up

I hope to have 5.13s put in during the next 2-3 months, depends on money with the other mods I want. You can have my 4.10s with around 8,000 miles on them then, I wont need them.

River thanks for the advice. I mis-spoke of quoting Dana 40 vs 44. Again my lack of knowledge. Can you please advise me where I can get alternate gears for my Dana 30. He mentioned something that the Dana 30 I have has something in it where it can't be modded? Due to the fact they made two different size dana 30's and I have the "small" dana 30 versus the "large" dana 30.

Just out of curiousity, are you sure you didnt swap those prices? I have been told a gear swap is ~$800 - 1,000

Nope thats what they were. $2400 for both front and back. Then add $800 for a new Dana 44 front for a total of $3200..

Check the vendors section. Most of them carry exactly what you are looking for.

The mechanic isn't COMPLETELY wrong. There are no aftermarket 4.10 gears for the JK. That is probably what he means. The only way to get them would be to buy them from a JK owner that had 4.10s and replaced them. You may be able to get them from a dealer parts department, but I'll bet they would be pricey. I think he gave you the prices backwards though. The D44 is more than $800.
