New Tires and Wheels Help!??
#11
As a newbie, I can understand your preference for the look of the Sahara...that is what I wanted! However, I lucked into a Rubi instead and now having been offroad three times, one of which I was able to get some of those of custom pin strips previously mentioned, I am glad I have the black ones...the painted ones will get trashed...quick!
Also, the Rubi is really great...even if you do not get heavy into the offroading scene, with just a minor lift and maybe some upgraded tires (read bigger) tires, you will have an awesome ride that will get you most anywhere. I doubt I will get that heavy into wheeling, but my few times on the trail, my Rubi got me some places that others (without the lockers and gears et al) did not go.
Enjoy!

x2 on taking your time and making wise decisions.
Every mod has pros and cons, but the only pros I can find for dubs is appearance (if you like that look) and reduced tire sidewall flex for road handling.
Cons:
- Road rash (curbs are your enemy)
- Off-road rash (nothing is friendly)
- Tall rims require wide tires to look proportional (depth clearance issues)
- There are limited tire models and sizes in 20"
- 20" Tires and wheels are more pricey
- Tall wheels push more mass towards the perimeter of the wheel increasing moment of inertia which affects MPG and braking
- The short tire sidewalls create a harsh ride
I understand appearance is important, but that is a lot negative factors to ignore.
Check out the Show Off Tread in Show and Tell section. There is no thread for Dubs (although if you don' mind fireworks you could start one ) but there are a few sprinkled throughout the different JK color threads particularly Black.
For snow you should stick with a lower void ratio tire than the Mud Grapplers. The Terra Grapplers are probably a better choice and you augment them with siping.
Where there is snow there is water, and many wide tires tend to hydroplane.
There are a number of recent threads discussing snow tires, but many of those tires are not offered in 20".
Freedom of choice. Choose wisely!

Best advice I've read for a newbie in a while.
If I had to guess by that picture you posted it looks like he's running 33" to 35" tires on a 2.5" lift. The only other mod he has it seems is a set of cheap Hella driving lights on the windshield. For lift kits, check and see what your local club runs on thier JK. Buying a good kit is a good idea but buying one that people know how to put on is an excellent idea. My club has putting a TeraFlex lift on down to a science. We tried to do a ProComp lift... took almost 10 hours if I remember correctly.
Wheels and tires are kind of an art. You have to buy whats right for your needs. If your Jeep's never going to see trails then those 20's will be fine but your ride quality may suffer due to increased unsprung weight.
What's unsprung weight?
Thats how the weight of your wheel and tire effects the performance of your suspension. Here's an analogy. Hold an apple in your hand, arm outstreched. Shake it up and down. Now do the same thing with a grapefruit. Which is easier to control? The apple. Your suspension does the same thing. It's designed to flex and recoil at a specific weight for a certain range of wheel and tire. 20" wheels weigh markedly more than 17" wheels so the suspension has to work much harder to accomidate it which results in a less comfortable ride.
I'm not saying this to disuade you from doing what you want to do. I just want you to be informed. You're probably looking at about $3000 just for wheels and tires if that's the route you're looking to take.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I ended up with a black sahara 2010. hard/soft top. I installed the pioneer bt-z110 aftermarket. got slush mats from mopar they fit nicely and look pretty good plus they catch a lot of the crap that falls of shoes here in the winter. Im enjoying my new jeep loving every minute. cant wait for warmer weather!
Im taking it slow, but Im still thinking about those wheels. I will post some pics soon and hopefully get some more useful opinions! again THANKS!
