Need Advice on Muffler vs Full Catback system
HELP!!!!
I need advice on just a Muffler vs a full Catback system.
I'm thinking of having a Magnaflow muffler put on my JK today.
I see where a lot of people are putting a full catback muffler system on, vs just replacing the stock muffler.
What are the pros and cons here? The local muffler shop is charging me 150 for the Magnaflow muffler that also includes install.
Another shop would charge 400 for the catback system plus another 150 for install.
Is it worth the extra money?
I'm looking for a deeper throatier sound.

I did the MBRP catback. It was around $389 on 4WD. I took it to a local general repair shop to do the work ($75). My reason for choosing catback was strictly because I was almost ready to replace the long pipe anyway. Typically the stock muffler is where most of the flow restriction is, so it's probably all you need to do.

I think if you go either route you should/could be able to do it yourself. It won't be welded but clamps work very well.
A lot of time when people go cat back it is to relocate the muffler from the vulnerable rear location to in front of the rear axle, this also will involve changing muffler shape from oval (standard shape) to a round.
With a cat back remove the old system and replace with the brand you buy. Sometimes you need to make sure fitment is correct, but all in all it is a hour or so job. So to me $150 for labor is a bit over the top.
The replace a muffler option price is pretty good though.
Good luck.

The catback will just simplify the install. Remove the stock pipe and muffler and replace with the new. If I had got just a muffler it might not have been as "plug and play". Like if the new muffler didn't match the stock as far as mounting it goes it could have been more of a pita to line it up, could need pipe bent/cut/welded/etc.
You could save some money by doing it yourself too. It's not hard. My tools being a younger single guy consisted of a 100 piece Craftsman set and some wrenches. Just use some WD40 on the hangers...the hardest part is getting the stock pipe off.

Thanks for the info guys, one question I still have though:
Are there benifits from the full (expensive) cat back system like MPG or HP? Or is it just to replace all the pipes vs. just the muffler?

There are a lot of benefits to a full cat-back system, mainly the R&D that is put into each system. I know for us it takes months of testing, designing, etc to get the right system for the end user. All systems (for the JK applications) have seen gains of 7-9 HP and about the same on TQ through the whole power band. This is stock JK exhaust vs stock JK with a DynoMax cat-back system.

Went with the Magnaflow today. It has a nice mellow tone with a slight grumble. Could be a little louder for me, but I had a 63 Impala with dual Flowmaster glass packs off Hooker headers, and that thing ROARED, I loved it.
